Spotlight: Thomas Parsons Memorial Scholarship

Carole and Bill Parsons are long-time supporters of Fairport-Perinton Dollars for Scholars. Since the late 90's they've sponsored a memorial scholarship in honor of their son, Tom Parsons. Tom was an avid volunteer who was passionate about giving his time at the Blessed Sacrament Church's Supper Program, which provides evening meals for the hungry and homeless in Rochester.

Each year, the Parsons' give $1,000 to a Fairport senior who shares the same passion for kindness and compassion that Tom did. "Tom was a blessing, and we didn't have him long enough. The scholarship honors Tom, and it allows others to learn about him and the difference he made in our community," said Bill Parsons.

Emily Thompson is the 2021 scholarship recipient, and has volunteered at the Blessed Sacrament Supper Program since she was in kindergarten. Emily plans to use the scholarship money towards her tuition at SUNY Brockport, where she'll major in Childhood Inclusive Education.

Emily has a unique connection to Tom Parsons. Her mother Kim was married to Tom when he passed away unexpectedly. Kim eventually remarried and had Emily and her two siblings. Emily is grateful for the impact Tom's legacy of volunteerism has had on her life. "When I found out my essay had been selected I immediately looked at my mom and knew how proud she was," said Emily. "It's like Tom is still sharing his kindness, and I want to thank the Parsons for their support," she added.
